Dear Intern

January 14, 2025
Dear Intenship Student ...

Congratulations ! We made it ! YOU MADE IT ★ and I would like to express how proud I am of you for sticking out this journey of nursing out so far . Whether you are an excited and expectant nurse/ midwife to be , or  you never again want to hear most patients' favourite phrase "nurse" when this is all said and done ? Well done , this is the beginning of the end. THE INTERNSHIP. Level ? THE FINAL BOSS

I'm sorry to be cliché but when your nurses and lecturers said the years would fly by ? They meant it . If you are an intern reading this then you know just how true this is , and if you are not ? Enjoy and embrace the journey for what it is : the good , the bad and the ugly. If you are reading this and you have absolutely nothing to do with healthcare the same goes for you too ! Enjoy & endure the seasons , they change fast.

So from the top !

Dear internship student ,

Stop doubting yourself , you have made it this far because you are capable and you are competent. Continue to show up everyday being intentional about your learning and development. You are on the journey of becoming , there will be some things you know and a lot of things you don't know. Never be embarrassed or proud to ask for help ! Every nurse has been in your shoes before ( whether they like to admit it or not ). Continue to show up everyday and give the best care to your patients. One of the phrases that get me through the long 13 hour work day is a quote by @nurse.johnn on TikTok "You chose to be a nurse , your patients did not choose to be a patient and your patients require your patience". This quote changed my perspective which consequently improved my character as patience is a virtue that I struggled with. The early starts and late finishes will very soon be worth it . You are not in this alone , we are all in this together. I am personally rooting for you . As you take care of others , be sure to also take care of yourself , you need it and you most definitely deserve it . On the days when you feel like throwing in the towel remember one thing : your why. Why do you want to be a nurse? Why did you embark on this journey ? For those of you that didn't choose nursing but nursing chose you ? There is still a why as to why you have endured this far . Remember your why ♡

Transition

If I was to describe the internship in one word it would be transition. Transition brings discomfort because you are letting go of an old way of doing things. Take it one shift at a time. From having minimal responsibilities to having full responsibility over your patients ? It's hefty ! From being unpaid staff to paid staff? ( Praise Him ! ). This is really the big girl/ boy era.

While transitioning and levelling up is an exciting process it definitely comes with its fair share of challenges.

My Challenges

In my 4th year supernumery block the handover was my nemesis. It made me so nervous the way I would stutter(rrerereree). As of now I feel so much confident giving handover after lots of practice.

‍My biggest challenge at the moment is time management and task prioritization. I remember when I was a first year nurse I thought the long day would never end ! Now that I am an intern I have had days where I wish I could have an hour or two added to the working day ! Oh how times have CHANGED. Everyday I am being intentional about how I can improve in the areas I am not thriving in. Let me tell you something , you will not improve by accident , you have to be intentional about it.

I am wishing all the interns a successful internship
